The 60′s Revolution and its Consequences

The 1960′s was an extrodinary time of relative peace, (I’ll talk about Vietnam in a sec,) wealth, and prosperity. After suffering through two major world wars and Korea, Americans felt that they now could see the glorious light of their sacrifices. They had jobs, their children were joyful and creative, their wifes were home baking cookies, and they had money in their pockets.

So what happened?

The powers that control our country, i.e., the largest corporationss and wealthiest American’s became fearful. They saw the rise of the middle class to the horrific force of being able to effect foriegn policy. The war protests by the middle class proved that the middle class could match their power! The consequences would be the most significant change in world history. Can you imagine if the middle class started dictating society.

What did they do?

They had to suppress the middle class, consciously or unconsciously, under the Nixon presidency, subtle changes began to take place over a period of decades.

Interest rates were lowered with the idea and ”fear” of stopping inflation, causing savings accounts to become stagnant.

“Tort Reform” was pushed to limit people’s rights to be compensated for their injuries.

Lawyers were banished from helping workers obtain workers compensation benefits. (Remember Shakespeare, “Kill all the lawyers.”)

Then came the complete annihilation of every small time business in American by large corporations such as Walmart and the business model of destroying competition by size.

And then the last bastion of hope, your retirement, was wiped out this year by the stock market and 0% interest rates.

The middle class has been banished to one car per person, everybody works, has a computer and a HD TV! The end of a short, but glorious reign.

The Election of 2006

All of a sudden everyone is a Democrat or some kind of moderate Republican. Getting out of Iraq is now cool, but don’t forget to get some meaning out of it, for the sake of the three thousand and countless injured left on the battlefield.

After 10 years of the hard line Republican rant, it is good that America did finally wake up a little. Maybe I was too pessimistic naming this site, “Comfortably Numb!” Let’s not get too carried away, by gosh it has only been a week!

The Eroding of Your Rights

The United States Congress passed legislation suspending the right of non-US citizens to writs of habeas corpus. I guess we are getting a little closer to Turkish law, like that is a country we should be emulating. Now any foreign visitor runs the risk of being arrested and thrown in a “foreign” jail with no rights to get before a judge. Are we making progress now? Maybe it’s the logic that when you get into a dog fight, you have to get down to their level. Who’s winning the war on terror – need I answer.

At the same time Congress passed legislation authorizing the building of a 700 mile fence along the Mexican border. When in the entire history of the world has that idea worked in the long run.

Now that we are safe from terrorist, what about the federal budget that was ignored, the economy stupid, education, foreign trade and foreignaffairs, and health care. Has anyone heard one idea from the administration on dealing with any of these major issues. “Stay the course.” It’s election time, bring out the usual fears and emotions to scare the Amierican public to continue on this meandering trillion dollar trip.
